While the 2014 Ram 1500 has been on the market for quite a bit already, green truck fans have been anxiously awaiting the release of the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which began production earlier this month. In just three short days, dealers from across the country ordered more than 8,000 of these bad boys, filling initial allocation.
But what’s more shocking is the amount of those orders that have already been paid for by customers. According to Ram, this total is “twice the corporate average of customer orders on a truck that customers have yet to test drive.” We have a feeling it has something to do with the EPA’s certification of 28 mpg for the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, which makes it the most fuel-efficient half-ton pickup (in the history of, like, ever).
So which truck did it beat out with its stellar 28-mpg rating, you ask? The traditionally powered 2013 Ram 1500, which yields 25 mpg highway. That’s right: Ram now has the top two most efficient half-ton pickups on the market.
“The Ram 1500 is the only half-ton truck available with a diesel, so we see this as incremental business by having the only truck that can offer best-in-class fuel economy of 28 MPG combined with 9,200 lbs. of towing capacity,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO, Ram Truck Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “It’s every truck manufacturer’s dream to have this kind of initial order demand for a product. Fuel economy is the No. 1 request of half-ton buyers and the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel delivers without compromising capability.”
If you haven’t laid claim to an EcoDiesel yet, don’t stress too much. Although Ram reached its allocation numbers in just three days, another order allocation of Ram 1500 EcoDiesels will open early next month.
