Fiat Chrysler’s (FCA) award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine is getting some great upgrades for the 2016 model year, including a bump up in efficiency, more torque, upgraded variable-valve timing, and much more.
“With more than five million Pentastars on the road, we have clearly struck a chord in the marketplace,” said Bob Lee, FCA North America Vice President — Engine, Powertrain and Electrified Propulsion and Systems Engineering, in a statement. “Such success brings enormous responsibility. Accordingly, we focused our efforts on improving efficiency and providing greater customer satisfaction in a package that delivers superior value.”
FCA says the improved engine will deliver fuel efficiency gains of more than 6% and torque has been increased more than 14.9% at speeds under 3,000 rpm. To make sure the improvements were made where it really counts, engineers clocked in more than 4.7 million customer-equivalent test miles. The end result is an engine that is reliable, efficient, and has the power it needs.
And, despite adding new components weighing 13 pounds total, the new engine weights four pounds less than the outgoing 3.6-liter Pentastar engine.
The first vehicle to get the updated engine will be the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This new engine will make the Grand Cherokee more efficient and more powerful with 295 horsepower.
